June 25, 2021 (Anchorage, AK) Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy today announced the distribution of $ 3 million in CARES Act funds for the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute (ASMI). The grant aims to mitigate unforeseen costs of COVID-19, including responding to the pandemic and complying with COVID-19 safety precautions.

“Alaska’s seafood industry is a strong pillar of our economy and my administration is committed to meeting the urgent and substantial needs of ASMI in the wake of the unforeseen costs of COVID-19 at scale Of the industry ” Governor Dunleavy said. “No one sells seafood like the Last Frontier, with its world-class stocks of fresh, nutritious and wild protein. Our fleets weathered the COVID storm, now is the time to continue delivering a piece of Alaska on a platter around the world. “

ASMI is a public-private partnership between the State of Alaska and the Alaskan seafood industry established to foster the economic development of a renewable natural resource. The organization actively works to promote the supply chain of the Alaskan seafood industry, including fishermen, processors, communities, transportation, state and federal agencies, international trade, la distribution, catering, retail, e-commerce, food delivery and consumers – all areas of which have been negatively impacted by COVID-19. The industry directly employs 26,000 Alaskan residents.

“I thank Governor Dunleavy for recognizing the importance of Alaskan seafood to the state’s economy,” said Jeremy Woodrow, executive director of ASMI. “CARES funding at ASMI is essential to cover the additional expenses incurred when the marketing focus has had to change, literally overnight, due to the effects and response to COVID-19 in order to retain the value of the global Alaska brand. This grant will help maintain the strong and much sought-after position of Alaskan seafood in the world market.

The funding for the CARES Act by Congress and authorized by the Alaska Legislature in 2020 is expected to expire in late June. Additional distributions of the CARES Act will continue to be announced in the coming days.
